In the summer we all wear sunscreen to take extra care of our skin. However, apart from suggestions for donning a cute fedora, there is a lack of chatter about how to take precautions against damage for your hair. During my last haircut, my stylist Alyssa Craigen hooked me up with a few tips to keep my curls healthy this summer, and, as usual, I am here to share the intel with you!
“Wet your hair before swimming in chlorine or salt water.” The reasoning is astonishingly simple. “If your hair is already wet it can’t absorb the chlorinated water the way it normally would if it were dry.” The same applies for sea water because the salt dries your locks out. So, wet your hair under the tap water or spray it down before you go in.
Coconut oil really helps if your hair is starting to act up or if it’s fried…use it as a preventive too. It’s harder to dry out hair that is well hydrated. Apply a small amount before you go to bed. Use the same amount as you would a dollop of conditioner- a dime or a quarter depending on your particular do. “Sleep with the coconut oil in your hair then shampoo and condition in the morning. It is an oil but it doesn’t leave a residue on your hair. It’s a miracle for people that suffer from fried summer hair.”
On hot and humid days most ladies feel like having our hair down is tantamount to torture. Tie it up but not too tight it or it can damage your locks. Messy bun and ponytail are always great summer classics but this summer it is all about the braids. “Braids are huge right now and it seems like every day someone is coming out with a new one. I love a fishtail, especially when the top of the hair is messy and loose.” If you’re not sure what to do check out some tutorials online, there are so many good ones!
