I have tickets to the symphony for the first time in ages and plans to the opera for the first time in my life this summer. What to wear?! I sought the advice of my longtime friend and fellow RapidLash devotee. She’s a gifted poet and the radio host of Saturday Night at the Opera on WKCR 89.9 FM NY, the beautiful Anne Fiero!! Anne regularly attends operas in New York City and has interviewed opera stars in the Metropolitan Opera’s recording studio! Here’s her advice for chic opera styling!
“The wonderful thing about getting dressed for the opera is that you don’t have to play it safe at all. You can be as outrageous or as subdued as you like.
If you have absolutely nothing in your closet to wear, I would suggest a little black cocktail dress. It is indispensable for evening wear of any and every sort. If you go strapless, which is my preference, you will likely need a little wrap or a shrug. Pair the LBD with your mother’s pearls or a pair of costume earrings. You can also accessorize with lacy stockings, feathers or jewelry for the hair, and of course, shoes. Keep things simple with your makeup. If you’ve been using your RapidLash, a quick coat of mascara and some color on your lips will do the trick.
Another go-to option for me is the metallic dress. It is just classic. All it needs is a pair of black shoes, simple earrings, and red lipstick. Gold works with my coloring, but I’ve seen bronze and silver dresses look dashing on women of different shades.
Less is more. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple, classic look. Wear shoes that you can actually walk in, especially if you are feeling nervous. Invest in a nice clutch. And once you’re there–forget about everything else and have a good time!”
Thanks Anne! We love you, your poetry, and your show!
