Have Yourself A RapidLash® Christmas!

Christmas is almost upon us! Do you also have that aunt, instructor, or distant relative that you just don’t know what to get them for the holidays? When in doubt, most people enjoy a little pampering. Here are a few reasons why RapidLash® (or RapidBrow®) make the perfect gift:

Compared to other brands of lash conditioners/enhancers, we’re one of the most affordable and, more importantly, effective. Check out our Before & After page as well as the clinical studies that have been done. If that’s not enough, check out some of our weekly Testimonials on our social media pages like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter @realrapidlash. RapidLash® results are overwhelmingly positive with a very small percentage (<1%) of people who fail to get results.

new product junkie testimonial

RapidLash® and RapidBrow® are great for make-up minimalists or “maximalists”! For those who seldom wear make-up, our products are a safe, easy, natural way to enhance one’s lashes and brows. And for those who love make-up, these conditioners are sure to make your lash and brow routine quicker and even more bodacious than before. Our products are also safe and encouraged to use with lash or brow extensions. They are encouraged for use to enhance the appearance of the hairs in-between and during treatments.

The results are super-satisfying. It’s not a race, it’s a marathon. When you consistently apply RapidLash®, RapidBrow®, or RapidHair™ over 4-8 weeks, you’ll find the results very much worth the wait and all the more satisfying.

Many times I hear from RapidLash® users who have a story similar to mine. After about 5 weeks of using RapidLash® I was taking off my mascara one night and noticed that my lashes were twice as long as before. My personal results with RapidBrow® were also fabulous and noticeable in a short 2-3 weeks. Remember, everyone’s hair-cycles are a little different; some results occur faster than others.

Long-looking lashes and bold-appearing brows are very nice gifts to give! This is especially true for someone who has struggled with the appearance of their lash, brows, or hair. Make sure to look out for our specials throughout the holiday season. For spa and salon owners, make sure you have enough RapidLash® and RapidBrow® in stock to fill your orders!

Merry Christmas to all,

And to all a lashful & bold year!

Traveling Beauty Essentials

‘Tis the season for parties, decorating for Christmas and New Years, buying gifts for loved ones, and of course traveling to see said loved ones. Unfortunately the traveling part of the holidays can be a bit stressful and has the potential to wreck havoc on your beauty routine without appropriate planning. We’ve put together the list of beauty traveling essentials for the total glam girl that you are.

Break it down.

Hair Items

"I woke up like this..."
“I woke up like this…”

Just imagine your routine from start to finish. What exactly do you use? Find reusable traveling containers and fill them with your favorite products before your trip.

My hair travel items list:

  • Shampoo+ Conditioner
  • RapidHair™ Volumizing formula
    • This lightweight foam is a must-have for anybody who needs their hair to look fuller and more volumized. The formula gives amazing texture as well. It can be used in dry or wet hair, which is a major bonus.
  • Leave-in Conditioner
  • Hair Serum
  • (I usually leave the blow dryer if I know where I’m going has one)
  • Hair Straightener
  • Hair clips & bobby pins
  • Mini Hair comb
  • UV Protectant finishing spray
  • Occasionally my clip-in hair extensions

Make-Up Items

Beautiful bride with wedding makeup and hairstyle, attractive newlywed woman have final preparation for wedding. Bride waiting groom. Happy newlywed. Marriage. Wedding day moments. Bride makeup.

Again, imagine your routine from start to finish, and start prepping. My list is far too long to include in depth here, but my basics include a primer, foundation, contour tools, brushes, and eye make-up all stored in my chic, easy-to-travel-with case.

Skin Care Items

photo composition of brunette girl putting face cream on her face - isolated on white background

Skin Care is the toughest category to generalize because everyone’s morning and evening routine is a bit different. I recommend the same advice: visualize what you normally do, and pack accordingly! It is ideal to find travel sized items for your skin care needs, but finding reusable travel-sized cases may be a good solution as well.

My skin care travel list includes:

  • Make-up remover wipes, spa headband, and hair ties
  • Cleanser, Toner, Vitamin A Moisturizer, & Broad Spectrum SPF
  • Eye Cream, lip scrub, and cherry-colored lip balm
  • RapidLash® & RapidBrow®
    • I try to apply my RapidLash® & RapidBrow® at least 3-4 times a week as a maintenance application. Both enhancing formulas are filled with peptides, amino acids, and additional ingredients that work over time to make the lashes and brows fuller-looking, longer-looking, and healthy-looking. Applying the clear serums is my favorite and final step in my nighttime skin care routine.

I talk about the beauty “essentials” in this blog, but also do not forget items like mouthwash, deodorant, a toothbrush, contact/glasses, a sleep mask, ear plugs, and, most importantly, a bottle of water for constant hydration! Making sure your skin, lashes, and brows look healthy will help you sleep soundly on your way to your destination.

Do I need a separate bag to carry these items on my travels? Maybe. Is it 100% worth it? Yes!  To read more about how RapidLash® & RapidBrow® can be valuable additions to your nighttime regimen, read this. Don’t forget to follow RapidLash accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram @realrapidlash, and Pinterest for the latest promotions, tips, & trends.

Happy travels, beauties!

How NOT To Mess Up Beauty Extensions

Research the Extension-Provider

Instagram is a useful tool when researching the work of a potential extension provider. Just like scoping out the work of a potential hair dresser, it can be helpful to view examples of extension jobs.

Location Comparisons

comparison edited

Look up all the deals and specials in your area. Take advantage of holiday specials and first-time membership deals. Also, think about the location in which you’re looking. After all, just like home-buying, service costs often increase and decrease based on location.

If in Doubt…

Consider How You Can Save $

money savings

Mascara costs add up over time, just like that morning cup of Joe from Dunkin. The formulas are always improving: made to be more clump-free, have better-designed brushes, and are made to be less-smudgable. In marketing terms, that means they will be able to charge you more! A great way to offset your monthly mascara cost is to buy false lashes or extensions. That means you can forego mascara all together or you can do what I do- use waterproof mascara once a week.

“The result: fabulous lashes and major $ savings.”

Consider The Time Savings

time management edited

Mascara application and removal every day takes about 15 minutes total. Those are minutes that could be better spent talking to a friend, making a healthy meal, doing downward dog, or browsing pinterest!
Brow products are also no doubt time-costly. Brow tools are useful and continue to rise in popularity, so you still may want to contour your brows along with your extensions. But trust me, you won’t have to use as much of them if you’re using extensions or RapidBrow®, and you will save yourself a lot of time. No more spending 15 minutes making sure your brow lines are symmetrical.

Remember Behind-The-Scenes Hair Care is Easy

gorgeous girl edited

What does this mean? It means even though professional extensions immediately give the appearance of full, thick, sexy, healthy hairs, you must still care for what you naturally have both in-between and during treatments. That’s where lash and brow conditioners come in and where RapidLash® and RapidBrow® has made real marks in improving the look of lash, brow, and hair in a natural way.

Extensions benefits are plentiful when done right. Enhanced beauty, confidence, and the time savings are priceless! Your “I woke up like this” goal is totally within your reach.

Why Beauty Extensions Are 100% Necessary

In the Day of the Selfie…

Why are beauty extensions necessary in this day and age? Whether it is lash, brow, or hair extensions, beauty extensions may seem like extravagances that are just for celebrities. However, they are actually testaments to advances in the cosmetic industry that make many women’s (and men’s) lives easier. They can be perfect for a special occasions like a wedding, an event, or just for everyday. Extensions are tools that can be used by anyone looking to enhance their looks quickly, shorten their morning routine, or simply boost confidence levels through the roof. It’s why brow bars are popping up in every strip mall, why every blogger’s selfies are full of long, *too-perfect* curls, and why I get asked about my eyelashes almost every day (more on that later). Today, we’re going to think about a couple primary reasons why we can’t live without extensions.

Some people have serious problems with the appearance of their hair.

edited profile pic

There are many factors that can affect the appearance of lash, brow, and head hair. The struggle with hair appearance is very real for a large amount of men and women, so the myth that extensions are just for bloggers or celebrities is not accurate at all.

They’re Convenient.

theyre convenient edited

Time is the major reason why I habitually go back to extensions. I do not have the time or the patience to wash off mascara every night. I just don’t. I will always make time to wash off every inch of the rest of my make-up. (In fact I have a strict skin care routine that I adhere to every night.) But washing off mascara is not a part of that routine, because having lash extensions means I get to skip a whole 10 minute process every night and the next morning. Yes, please.

I also am able to use a lash conditioner, RapidLash®, while wearing extensions, and it is highly recommended for using in-between or during eyelash extension treatments. The clear serum can be applied nightly before bed and the benefits results in healthier-looking, stronger-appearing lashes. Extensions do not have to be ultra-damaging if done right.

The time factor is also crucial when thinking about eyebrow extensions. While lashes might only need a coat of mascara to finish the job, brow contouring every morning is much trickier and also time-consuming. Brow extensions can save you time and money instead of reaching for your wallet to buy more brow shaping tools. Another extension-friendly alternative is the clear, easy-to-use serum RapidBrow® which does the same thing to your eyebrows that RapidLash® does to the lashes. It’s a no brainer, natural alternative to traditional brow shaping and contouring. I still like shaping the eyebrows with a tool, but trust me; the process takes about 30 seconds instead of 5 minutes. Time is precious!

They’re FUN.

more fun edited

Extensions have gained the momentum that they have in the last 10 years because they are tools to enhance your look instantly! Your photos will instantly look phenomenal! You will feel amazing going on that first date. Why do you think celebrities use eyelash, brow, and hair extensions? It is because they always have to look put together and ready for photos. Extensions are just one celebrity secret that make “photo-ready” a real possibility.

You’ll Look More Beautiful, Scientifically

Enhancing the eyes, brows, and hair increases the amount of “facial contrast” that you have, and thus increases others perception of your beauty. According to research on what constitutes “beauty,” it turns out the human eye registers images of faces with higher facial contrast as more beautiful than those with less contrast. Think back to more historic times- when red lipstick was a trademark of beauty. It contrasted the color of the lips with the skin. Now fast forward to today, and it becomes clear why we continue to outline features such as the eyes and eyebrows.

Self-Esteem Boosters

self esteem boosters edited

Lastly, and arguably the most important reason why extensions are necessary, is that extensions can serve as tools that boost your self esteem. I am not saying you can replace tool likes a good support system, positive self talk, or spending time on yourself with mere lash, brow, or hair extensions, but sometimes people need a visible change to get their momentum going. I’ve seen such effects firsthand.

Many testimonials of RapidLash®, RapidBrow®, and RapidHair™ users are walking examples of people who seek real solutions for boosting their everyday life. RapidLash® is proud that their products can be used alone or alongside extensions to assist in improving the look of lash, brow, and hair with RapidLash®, RapidBrow®, and RapidHair™ respectively. I highly recommend using them in either fashion. They work to enhance the look of healthy hair in a natural, super-easy way in a short 4-6 weeks.

Ariana Grande Style Tutorial

Ariana’s style is the epitome of playful & sexy. Ariana’s stylists must create looks for her that are as stylistically appealing as her music is. Today, we’re delving into the foundation of Ariana’s signature look, the high-and-tight pony tail, her frustratingly perfect eyeliner, and her always-on-point brow shaping game. After reading this, you will have one less one less problem to worry about when getting ready for your next night out.

710x500 ariana

Given that your hair falls below your shoulders, anyone should be able to easily achieve this sexy, playful style. To start, flip your hair upside down and gather your hair at the top-back of the head. To eliminate annoying and unsightly bumps, keep your hair gathered, take a comb or brush, and brush 360 degrees around the gathered hair towards the pony tail, re-gathering as you go. Triple-loop the hair back with thin elastic. For an ultra-finish, wrap a thin strand of hair around the elastic and bobby-pin the end of the strand into the hair. Hair spray or finishing spray is helpful to combat fly-away hairs. If you’re someone who needs styling help, I would recommend a scalp serum like RapidHair™ to help keep the look volume and health. It is easy to use- on dry or wet hair. It has the benefits of a potent hair serum and the texture benefits of a dry shampoo. Yes please! The scalp is really the root of all hair dilemmas; a scalp serum is my number one recommendation for healthy hair maintenance. For more styles, see this.

Prime the eye to ensure your gorgeous look stays on all day and doesn’t smudge. Take a gel or liquid eyeliner (pencil eyeliner is a bit tricky for the thin line Ariana uses) and take the color in a very thin line all the way across the eye down to the tear-ducks and out towards the ears with a subtle, winged flick. For the bottom of the eyes, apply a thin line into the waterline, stretching all the way across the eyes, meeting the ends of where the top lines. The eyeliner is applied 360 in this case! Typically, I don’t apply eyeliner all the way around, as it tends to make my eyes look smaller, but for this specific look, it is appropriate and flattering.

Eyeliner application is sort of a 1-shot thing. That is usually why the eye make-up is the longest part of a make-up routine. You don’t want to have to edit the line too much, because you’ll take off your primer as well as the eyeliner. Don’t get frustrated- Practice makes perfect.

brow and liner 710x500

To enhance the look of the brows themselves, use a targeted Brow serum at night like RapidBrow®, which will enhance and fortify your natural brow hairs with vitamins and peptides. To fill in your beauteous brows, take your brow make-up of choice (colored gel, tinted brow mascara, a brow pencil, etc), fill in to the appropriate brow shape and comb your brushes into a tamed, subtle arch. For more on brow shaping, read  EyeBrow Contouring 101.

Use your favorite Volumizing mascara, and finish with some va-va-voom lash extensions. I definitely recommend using a lash conditioner like RapidLash® at nighttime if you usually wear lash extensions. I know personally the havoc extensions can wreck on the lashes, so my RapidLash® helps keep them strong and long-looking!

For tips on Ariana-style face makeup and contouring, I would check out this fab Australian-beauty YouTube tutorial that re-caps all of these tips and goes in depth about face contouring.

Truth About “Cold Remedies”

It happens every year. The weather changes and boom- a horrible cold spreads through every office, daycare center, and household. Luckily we have the 411 on what you can do both preventatively and which common remedies actually do what you would hope they would do.

Biology of a Cold:

The common cold is a type of “rhinovirus.” There are over a couple hundred types of known strains- So the one you get each year is probably different from the one before.  The span of a cold typically lasts about 7-10 days.  Despite the hope and belief that certain medicines and remedies are stopping the cold virus in its tracks, the truth is your body is relentlessly working to rid itself of the virus, and it is probably your body that is effectively fighting the infection not any magic pill. We’ll tell you the best ways to promote health and take care of yourself in the event that you do catch a nasty cold.

Prevention is the Best Medicine:

  • Limit your spread of the virus if you have it, and if someone else has it, limit contact with them and the surfaces they touch. It’s why I barricaded myself away from my boyfriend when he came down with a nasty cold a few weeks ago. Sorry boo.
  • DON’T BE THAT PERSON WHO SNEEZES AND COUGHS IN THE DIRECTION OF EVERYONE ELSE. Or on the coffee maker, or the water bubbler, the fridge, on the door handles, etc. Unless the person coughed or sneezed right on you (shame on them), these surfaces are probably where you are picking up the germs. Cue your mother’s advice of washing your hands often. And for the love of goodness, if you need to cough- use your elbow, or be prepared for dirty looks from everyone in the room, including me. Forget the hand sanitizer, because it turns out the results are dismal on the efficacy of those too. Sigh, I know.
  • Stop touching your face. Not only is this bad for your skin and hair because of the transfer of oils and dirt from your hands, but you could be accidentally transferring germs to those sensitive areas by doing this. It’s a hard habit to break, but just tell yourself “No!” anytime you get the urge.
  • Decrease stress in your life. Due to the difficulty of studying the effects of stress on biological changes in immune function, there is currently no direct link between stress and immune function, however there are reasonable guesses about a possible link. We can infer from other studies that stress may be a possible factor in the ability to ward off sickness. Read this for de-stressing tactics.

Living room fitness workout - girl doing plank exercises to exer

  • Daily exercise is one of the best preventative actions a person can do to increase their overall health and wellness. There is not yet a direct link to exercise and immune function. When you work out, your body releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones, and are especially needed on a day you’re feeling down in the dumps. Nothing that a little downward dog meditation can’t fix!
  • Speaking of downward dog, have SEX often! This may be the last thing you’re thinking about in on the worst day of your cold, but when you feel like you are on the upswing, do yourself a favor: grab a partner or have a solo session. Studies show that having sex has many health benefits such as lowering stress, improving sleep quality, relieving minor pains, and increasing production of the antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA) which helps the body’s defenses against minor germs. The benefits appear to be due to the body’s release of hormones like endorphins, estrogen, and testosterone, similar to those produced when exercising! Of course, be safe and use protection, at all costs.
  • Speaking of the D, There is something to be said for making sure you have adequate Vitamin D Appropriate levels should be contained in your go-to daily multivitamin. Just make sure not to go overboard with it!
  • Eat a vitamin, nutrient-rich diet every day! A combination of daily vitamins and nutrients are a great way to ensure your body is able to support its functioning day to day. Livings off coffee and bagels will only get you so far before you’re on bed-rest for a week, believe me! Look up “Mediterranean diet” for starter ideas.

These cold-curing myths are just that-myths.

  • Homeopathic options like Echinacea or Aloe Vera are tricky to discuss because there is not strong enough research backing. One should be skeptical for any company claiming that a single product or ingredient can affect the whole body’s functioning. Remember, the immune system is the result of a large number of wellness factors and cannot be “boosted” by any one thing. Any improvement in symptoms may be psychological or coincidental with the body’s quick ability to heal itself. Those remedies on pinterest look so enticing! Not so much.

Sliced Citrus Fruit - Lime, Lemon, Orange And Grapefruit

  • Vitamin C remedies have shown weak evidence supporting a shorter, less intense cold in adults. Despite incredibly effective orange juice commercials, this common myth is kind of busted. Take a daily multivitamin, and make healthy lifestyle choices in the hope of boosting your immune system instead.
  • Probiotics seem helpful for some at treating bowel and digestive symptoms, but the jury is still out on the link between “good bacteria” on fighting bad bacteria contracted from a cold. Furthermore, there is a varied quality of probiotic products on the market. Taking a small amount each day through a pill or in yogurt will most likely not hurt you, but we’re holding our breath before validating the widespread health claims for this type of supplement.
  • Lastly, an apple a day is certainly a fantastic source of fiber and vitamins, but it doesn’t do much for our ability to fend off a cold. Sorry!

When It’s Too Late:

These remedies will not shorten your cold, but will make living through it a lot easier.

  • A favorite go-to of mine is hot, homemade soup. Though there is not overwhelming evidential support, I would say most people (even doctors) agree that soup is a comfortable, soothing option to “open the airways.” Truth is, it loosens the mucus pockets in the nasal cavity, typically making it easier to breathe. Try this “winter soup” recipe here.

Sensual Woman With Dark Hair And Bright Makeup Lying In Bed

  • Sleep it off. The body is working harder than ever when it’s assaulted by a virus, so use it as an excuse to get some extra shut-eye. Try investing in a plush sleep mask and ear plugs. They are worth every penny.
  • Saline sprays & nasal washes also appear to be beneficial for treating the annoying symptom of a clogged the nasal cavity, but show no improvement for shortening the lifespan of the cold itself. These are great for a better ability to breathe. Yay!
  • To ease a nasty cough, try a spoonful of sugar honey. This beautiful golden sweetness has been shown to effectively lessen cough symptoms not to mention makes tea taste delightful.

  • Treat yourself! What is one of your favorite comforts? A hot cup of tea? A juicy book? A funny, new movie? A soothing face mask? We recommend investing in a little tube of RapidLash® to brighten anyone’s cold season. It works silently overnight, so you won’t even have to think about the benefits this lash-enhancing serum is doing to make your lashes look long-looking, gorgeous and full! I may feel like as sick as a dog, but heck, my lashes look great, and that makes me feel good any day of the week.

If anything else, do something for yourself you know will improve your overall mood. Sometimes we all need an excuse to slow down and take care of ourselves.

Wishing you happiness & health, beauties!

Catherine C., Lashing Out

I sat down with make-up artist, fashion major, esthetician, and my friend Chelsea today to discuss some of the most popular beauty questions that come up during the cooler months. Having used to work with her as a consultant, we share a passion for staying in-the-know about the latest that the beauty and skin care industry has to offer. Unsurprisingly, there is always something new to talk about.

How long have you worked in the beauty industry again? I’ve been working in the beauty industry for five years.
This year, what are the biggest trends that you are seeing emerge for Fall/Winter ‘15? Right now, a lot of people are looking for that perfect dark lip (which, I think, will always be a winter staple). Also, the Instagram-extreme-squared-off brow is slowly being replaced by a really full, but softer, feathery brow. I’m also seeing a lot of naturally radiant, glowy skin.

Beautiful woman face. Perfect makeup. Beauty fashion. Eyelashes. Cosmetic Eyeshadow. Highlighting. Black and white

What does your personal skin care regimen look like? Cleanse and moisturize in the morning. At night I do a double cleanse. So I’ll use a good cleansing water to remove any makeup and then afterwards go in with my Clarisonic mia 2 and a creamy cleanser. I’ll follow up with my favorite eye cream and moisturizer of the moment. And, if I’m good, I’ll throw a serum on underneath.

What is your favorite weekly pampering routine when it comes to skin care?
A favorite mask? An Under-eye pad treatment? So many options! Once a week I’ll take a night to do a peel (any Dr. Dennis gross peel) and follow up with a mask. I’m a mask junkie (I take home samples whenever I find a new one I love.) Lately I’ve really been loving sheet masks). I’ll really take the time to layer my products and use a good treatment underneath my moisturizer.

black and white portrait with red lips studio shot

What are you favorite lip products on the market these days? Kat Von D colors are killing it right now. She makes colors so hard to find on the market. Plus they’re super matte and vibrant. Nars and Bite Beauty will always be my true loves though.
What tips for a red-lip do you have? Line and then fill in lip with matching red. Apply lipstick, blot and do another layer. Use a skin tone colored eyeliner and line outside of lip to really make it look crisp and clean.

What are your thoughts on lip liners? I’m a liner junkie, I have more liners than lipsticks. I’ll usually skip the lipstick and just color in my whole lip with a liner.

Any tips for keeping lips looking youthful in later years? Hydrate, treat your lips like the rest of the skin on your face. My favorite product is the lip mask from Bite Beauty I use it every night.

What do primers actually do, for those who are unfamiliar?
Primers create a barrier between your skin and makeup. Alone on the skin, a foundation will slip and slide, a primer gives foundation to grab onto. (I always explain it this way to people) Nobody’s skin is paper smooth. We all have crevices and valleys in our skin. Putting foundation directly on that skin, you’ll have makeup settling into those areas and it just won’t look its best. By using a primer, the primer fills in those areas so you have that paper smooth surface to apply your foundation on top of.

Why should people really use them?
You’ll use less product and save yourself the headache of touch ups.
Sounds good enough reason for me! I switch it up between my Becca primer and my Laura one.

Beautiful bride with wedding makeup and hairstyle, attractive newlywed woman have final preparation for wedding. Bride waiting groom. Happy newlywed. Marriage. Wedding day moments. Bride makeup.

What trends in foundation have you seen this year and for the upcoming season? It’s all about the glow.
The world is obsessed with highlighters right now (as they should be. Which ones are your absolute favorites? Literally anything Becca makes.
I would agree 100%. The brand makes beautiful products. I’m obsessed with their powder and liquid highlighters, the blush, the foundation… Shall I go on?

Set of makeup products to even out skin tone and complexion: concealer corrector open cream foundation bottle jar of loose powder crushed compact powder with makeup brushes and cosmetic sponge

What concerns are common going into the fall/winter months regarding face make-up? Switching shades (come into Sephora for Color IQ and we can find your perfect match in all the foundations carried in under a minute). Also a lot of people’s skin changes and gets drier.

What are your best tips for picking the perfect foundation? Take your skin into consideration. If your skin is dry and flaky get a moisturizing product. Know what coverage you’re looking for. Match to your jaw not your hand.

What is your personal go-to choice for foundation? Right now Smooth Finish Flawless from Laura Mercier. It looks like skin.

What brand is really taking off in popularity among your clients? Makeup forever just reformulated their HD foundation and it’s a fave among clients it seems. (I also wear and love it)

I definitely like applying my make-up with brushes versus my fingers, but what do you recommend to get the best finish? It depends on the makeup. For some, fingers really do the best job at working product into the skin. For other thicker foundations I love a damp beauty blender. It sheers the foundation out so it’s easier to work with and layer.

makeup Brushes

What do you recommend as far as brush-cleaning goes? If you’re wearing your makeup everyday and using the same brush I would say wash it once a week or once every other. I love solid brush cleansers, they look like bars of soap and you can just swirl your brush around in it, no mess. (Beauty blender and Sephora make one)

What is your favorite thing about being a make-up artist? It’s such a rewarding job and those few minutes you get with someone, I’ve learned, can truly make a difference in someone’s life. You get to make people feel beautiful. So many of the women who sit in the chair are already beautiful inside and out, they just need that extra boost for them to see it themselves. I’ve worked on women with cancer and young girls who suffer from trichotillomania who need help creating brows. Seeing them light up when they look into the mirror, reminds me that I have the best job ever.
Least favorite? I’m forever cleaning brushes!!!!!!

Fall Time Skin-Scares!

For so many, the fall is their absolute favorite season. For your skin, maybe not so much. Many tend to see an increase of breakouts and experience overall, dull-looking skin during this gorgeous time of year! Why? The fall is an interesting time for skin care. There are a few reasons why some contract what I call “Fall time Skin Care Syndrome.” For some, their summertime skin care routines start tapering off due to a busier schedule, running out of product, or mistakenly thinking that the same steps aren’t necessary. We know the cooler months is a signal to increase quenching products for the skin but it also means raising awareness to issues that are less than obvious.
See below for some of our best fall skin care tips:

The 1st, Most Important Step of Your Routine

Woman with wet hair standing using a peeling glove in a shower rubbing her shoulder to remove dead cells and rejuvenate her skin in a personal hygiene skincare and beauty concept view from behind

Hydration is usually the instinct that most people tend to go with when the temps change for the cooler, but we must not neglect the most important step in the skin regimen (besides daily SPF coverage)- exfoliation! Firstly, when the wind and cold hits the skin, the moisture basically evaporates. So hence, hydrate, right!? Not so fast! Remember that the cold, “clean” feeling doesn’t negate the fact that we need to continually remove dead skin cells from the skin surface. Exfoliation is the first issue we must tackle, no matter what season it is.

Exfoliators come in many shapes and forms-both chemical (ex: alpha hydroxy acids) and physical (ground oatmeal). So do your research and try out different scrubs, toners, and masks with exfoliating elements in them. Some of the most popular and effective exfoliators include lactic acid, mandelic acid, and asiatic acids. Physical exfoliating formulas can be effective too, but stay away from harsh ingredients like crushed shells or environmentally-dangerous micro beads.

I believe neglecting to exfoliate in the fall and winter months is just one reason many women have a harder time finding a proper fall/winter foundation- a foundation will never look as good as it should if the skin itself isn’t cared and prepped properly. I would look for a gentle exfoliator that has hydrating ingredients in it, so that you are not stripping away the skin’s protective barrier while effectively removing dry, dead skin. You should consider a gentle exfoliation product for the skin every day, unless your dermatologist recommends otherwise.

Vitamin A

Mature woman portrait

These days, retinol is not just for nighttime-use, folks. There a few select brands that have effectively made the gentle fat-form of Vitamin A in topical products. Vitamin A is a necessary skin care ingredient because it nourishes the appearance of the skin and is the only ingredient that has been clinically proved to combat the visible appearance of aging. Look for skin care moisturizers with retinyl palmitate, and make sure to follow up with your favorite SPF formula. Use of a broad-spectrum SPF, meaning protection against both UVA and UVB radiation waves, is just as important in rainy, overcast weather as it is on a bright, sunny day.

Hydrate again!

In the summer months, my routine would skip this extra moisturizing step, and go right into my make-up process, but in the colder months, I insert a step in between my Vitamin A moisturizer and my foundation. Skin oil capsules, oil-mists, and peptide moisturizers are the products you should consider adding to your repertoire during this time of year. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Vitamins A, C, E, and peptides. You may not even need to use them every day, but a little added moisture in areas around your nose, on your forehead, and around the eye may provide just enough moisture to make your skin forget that it is not summertime.

Remember the Lashes and Eyebrows

Close up of natural female eye isolated on white background

Your eyelashes and eyebrows need love and hydration JUST as much as your skin does. The cold can especially impact the look of healthy-appearing lashes and brows. A serum like RapidLash® or RapidBrow® is the perfect investment (or gift!) during the fall and winter months. These two serums contain conditioning ingredients like peptides, panthenol, biotin, amino acids, oils, and other ingredients that work together to combat year-round environmental abuse. With Halloween coming up in a few weeks –where false eyelashes are commonly applied on the lashes – start out a serum NOW to ensure the base of your lashes appear their healthiest and strongest.

The Hydrating Mask

Funny smiling Spa Woman applying fresh Facial Mask with cucumbers. Beauty Treatments. Face mask, skin care concept. Beautiful Woman Applying Natural Homemade Facial Mask

Face masks are typically recommended about once a week, and the type of mask used depends on a number of factors. For any normal, oily, or combination skin, a hydrating masque is a safe bet to try in the cooler months. You should look for a masque with a combination of detoxifying and hydrating elements such as kaolin clay and Vitamin E. Consider splurging on a facial at a local skin spa. Ask for what specials are going on in your area! You deserve it, and your skin will thank you.

Stay quenched, my friends!

The fall is arguably the best time to scroll through those autumn-themed pins and to whip out those aprons. But it is also a common time that people put on extra weight! Instead of giving up your favorite fall treats all together, we want to provide you with some healthier versions of our favorite fall recipes including a skinny spin on some classic, fall-time cocktails!

Keep in mind, we know elements like sugar and other processed chemicals are not-so-friendly ingredients for our weight and especially for our hair, skin, and nails! Hence, it is my aim to come up with tasty recipes that contain naturally-occurring ingredients over processed ones. We want to provide our body with the most vitamin and nutrient-rich food available so that the body has an easier time distributing those vitamins where we want them to go most (eh hem, hair, skin, and nails).
I dare you to try these recipes and see if anyone if your family notices a difference:

“Pumpkin Pie” (Paleo-friendly)

Pie crust:1 ½ c. almond flour
1 egg
2 tbs. butter
Combine mix and shape into pie pan. Food processor or blender may be helpful to create a more consistent, fine texture.
Filling:1 small can pumpkin puree, unsweetened
½ can coconut milk
½ c. honey or agave sweetener
2 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

Combine filling ingredients in a large mixing bowl (or use food processor or high-speed blender for a quicker, thicker mix!) then distribute on top of pie crust.

Bake for 45-55 minutes at 350 degrees. Check the center for completion!
Pair with coconut-milk ice cream, homemade whipped cream, or cottage cheese.
If you need any more reasons to hop on the pumpkin train, read this article: The Superfood to Know- PUMPKIN EDITION

“Apple Crisp” (…also Paleo-friendly)

shutterstock_309756380Apple crisp is TOO delicious to pass up this time of year, but I just cannot get over the fact that there is so much flour and sugar in the typical recipe. So I’ve found a paleo-friendly, healthier version to satisfy my fall craving for this traditional sweet treat! Enjoy!

Apple Filling:
4 cups of sliced apples
¼ c coconut milk (or almond milk)
2 tsp. lemon juice
2 tbs. maple syrup, honey, or agave sweetener (optional)
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp. allspice
Crumbly Goodness:
¼ c. coconut flour
¼ c. almond flour
Note: Just invest in both of the above products. Used together, they are a perfect substitute for most flour-containing recipes.
1 tbs. chopped nuts (pecans are my favorite)
1 tbs. coconut sugar
1tsp cinnamon
3 1/2 tbs. coconut oil
Pinch of sea salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease 8×8 pan with coconut oil, ghee, or butter. Combine “filling” ingredients in a mixing bowl, and then distribute evenly into pan. Combine “crumbly goodness” ingredients in a bowl with your hands, and even sprinkle over the filling mixture. Bake in oven for about 20 minutes.

Serve warm with coconut-milk ice cream, whipped cream, cottage cheese, or any other ice cream variation. Serve with hot tea, apple cider, warm milk, or one of our fall cocktails.
For a super-super-quick version, I sometimes warm up sliced apples or pears in the microwave and then top with nuts, cinnamon and cottage cheese on top.

Best Cold-Weather Soup EVER

1lb Italian sausage (I like a spicy sausage!)
2 large yams (or sweet potatoes), unpeeled, chopped into cubes
1large sweet onion, chopped
4-5 bacon slices, sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 cups kale or 2 cups Swiss chard, or spinach
2 (8 ounce) cans chicken broth
1 quart water
1cup heavy whipping cream (Use milk instead for a lighter version)
1 c navy beans, or your favorite bean (optional)
Gluten-free pasta (optional)
1 c. corn (optional)
Salt & Pepper to taste
Top with Parmesan (optional)

Start off by cooking the bacon pieces in a sauté pan, and keep to the side.
Take a large soup pot and sauté the Italian sausage in olive oil with the chopped garlic and onions.

In the same pot, add chicken broth, water, and stir. Add yam cubes, spinach, and beans (and corn if desired). Cook until yams are almost soft. Add cream (or milk). Add pasta (if desired) and turn off heat when it is done cooking through. The yams should be soft by then. Add salt and pepper to taste. Top with bacon pieces and Parmesan cheese. Serve with warm wheat bread and pumpkin butter.

If you cannot tell, this recipe has a fabulous flavor base from the bacon, sausage, onion, garlic, and chicken broth. After that- it’s all you! You can add, subtract, or customize the other ingredients to your liking, even making it creamier or less creamy. My boyfriend, who is 100% Italian, even approves of this, so it’s a definite winner in my book! Bon appetito!

Baked Brie Appetizer

shutterstock_209213263Baked brie recipes are lifesavers when you don’t want to bring the standard wine bottle over someone’s house for a party. And who doesn’t like warm, fancy French cheese anyway?
For the fall, try this variation with warm pumpkin butter and nuts. The sweet, nutty flavors complement the flavor of brie perfectly.

Pumpkin butter topping:
1 c. butter (2 sticks)
¾ tsp. cinnamon
6 tbs. pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
4 tbs honey, maple syrup, or agave sweetener
1 tsp. vanilla extract
½ c. walnuts (or nut of choice)

Spread pumpkin butter and walnuts on top of brie, and warm in oven at 350 for about 20 minutes or until brie is melted sufficiently. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon to finish off and serve with pear slices, apple slices, or table crackers. Pair with your favorite red wine or one of the fall cocktails below!

Black-spirited: The Skinny Espresso Martini

shutterstock_263074592Espresso martinis are a fabulous way to put a nightcap on any night out, but in the cooler months, they just seem so appropriate!
Try out this combination:

Espresso or coffee (chilled or hot)
Flavored vodka (try vanilla or marshmallow)
Splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream
Vary your ratio of coffee to vodka depending on your preferred drink-strength. Shake well and garnish with a few coffee beans. Voila, and the night has only begun!

Apple Cinnamon Toddy

I think this is the ultimate fall drink guys. It goes by many names, but you’ll know it when you taste it. The recipe can be varied to your liking, but if you’re trying for the first time, try out this combination:

1 c apple cider (either instant mix or homemade)
2 oz spiced rum (or if you prefer: honey whiskey)
Small slice of butter
Sprinkle of cinnamon
Whipped cream for topping

Though this particular cocktail isn’t the healthiest recipe we’ve ever posted, it sure is full of all the spiciness and warmth that you could hope for this fall. Share these recipes and let us know what your favorite fall traditions are on our social pages!

Happy fall!

Hair-Styling Products Guide for 2015

With the thousands of hair products out there, we believe a new guide is in order to better help you gals and guys get creative this season. Just in time for colder, windier weather, these tips could help you protect the ends of your hair to ensure healthier and shinier-looking hair all season long. The difference could be as simple as adding or changing one product in your routine! And no one likes a quick, tamed hair-do like us.
The best thing about these great hair tools is that, the more you put into your routine, the better your hair will look longer. So yes, I use a number of different products depending on what I am styling my hair for, but I only have to go through the routine 2 times a week, at most, allowing me the most time possible to be productive while looking crisp and polished.

Blow Dry Creams

shutterstock_320843048These are amazing styling products that ensure a long life of “good hair day” for 3-4 days instead of just that first day. Most also boast that they are great for damaged hair or for those simply looking to protect strands from future damage. If you haven’t tried a great blow dry cream, ask for samples, or try a small size, and find one to fall in love with! Instyle assistant editor Marianne Mychakiw lists some of her favorites, which happen to coalesce with some of mine too! Tried and true brands include Bumble and Bumble, Fekkai (I’ve used their shamp. & cond. for years now!), Oribe, and Blow Pro just to name a few.

Scalp Treatments

Scalp treatments are definitely not new to the hair world, but the mainstream population is becoming more aware of the importance of treating not just the strands of hair but the “root” of the issue. Depending on your hair type and hair concern when it comes to scalp maintenance, there are definitely some options for you. For those who are more concerned and need to improve the appearance of fuller-looking hair, I would try the RapidHair™ Hair Volumizing formula, RapidLash’s sister product that is applied directly on the scalp. Containing a peptide, biotin, panthenol, and amino acid-filled formula, this light, treatment foam is sure to deliver positive results.

shutterstock_320938766Ah, serums, where do I begin? These have been my favorite hair product for as long as I can remember. Usually liquid and silky in texture, these are a must-have pre-heat product. Ask your hair stylist which one he or she recommends, and try starting with your favorite brands first! One I go back to time and time again is the CHI serum, which just happens to smell like a delicious and subtle men’s cologne. Yes please! Always apply to the ends of the strands in moderation.

Thermal Sprays

If your hair is not fond of blow dry creams or serums, a thermal spray may be your hair’s saving grace. These hair styling products are also great for pre-heat protection but tend to feel much lighter in weight and application. To ensure full protection benefits, lightly spritz on the strands before blow-drying and again on each strand before using your styling tool. CHI just happens to make an amazing keratin-infused mist which I cannot seem to find a good enough comparison against. The L’Oreal thermal heat spray also tends to get high reviews among beauty experts and is on my list of things to try.

shutterstock_320859866Leave-in-conditions are God’s gift to those who don’t just “wake up like this.” These tend to assist with eliminating frizziness and leave hair looking and feeling like that faux-rabbit-fur vest you’ve been eyeing in that boutique window. If you have never tried one, I would highly recommend if frizziness is a daily struggle. It’s a 10 leave-in conditioner is a brand for the ages. Once tried, you will. Not. Go. Back.

Deep Conditioners

Once upon a time, I ran out of my deep conditioning hair mask and failed to go out and buy a new one. Now I am doing MAJOR damage-control to make up for the lost benefits of doing the expert-prescribed weekly deep condition. Usually made up of greater percentages of conditioning emulsifying agents, these products are specifically created to rehab hair strands back to their healthiest and shiniest appearance. I recommend applying generously all over the scalp and strand area, leaving on the scalp for about 5 minutes. Do not forget this weekly regimen, at all costs, and in the fall/winter months, you may even consider increasing the frequency of a deep condition.

Can hair volume exist without the drying side effects? Many beauty aficionados tend to be conscious that products like mousse, shine spray, and hair spray often contain forms of alcohol or other ingredients that are inherently drying to the hair strands. Luckily for us, science and cosmetics have come together more efficiently as of late, which means more and more formulas have strayed away from drying components. Ask your stylist which one he or she would use, and make sure to tell him or her biggest concerns with trying one.

Pomades and Styling Creams Galore

shutterstock_313196696I came upon one of my favorite styling creams ever by accident. As I mentioned, I am quite fond of serums or any product that is effective at protecting the hair strands from splitting. I bought an almond-oil-infused hair styling cream on sale one day, and I still use it on the ends of my hair when I want to switch it up from using my usual, high-end hair serum. If you’re on a budget but you still want to protect the ends of your hair, a hair pomade or cream (even a man’s product) may become your best healthy-hair secret yet.

Hairspray vs. finishing spray

I used to be a huge fan daily hairspray use. How else was my hair supposed to look that perfect for those 12-hour-days? Well, years of hairspray habits, as well as coloring my hair, wasn’t really the best thing for keeping the ends looking their best. That was then though; Many hairspray formula’s conditioning abilities have improved over the past decade!

Your decision to use either and hairspray vs. finishing spray will probably rely on your hair type and thickness. More hair? You will probably need more of a glossing, softening formula with the allowance for maneuverability. Less hair? I bet you will prefer products that deliver more hold and more texture. Typically hairsprays provide more hold while finishing sprays often provide more of a shine. The real unicorn of these products will provide a combination of hold, shine, and softness.

The Power of a Hair Style

shutterstock_320304071Even after the meticulous researching and trial & error that we go through with the latest and greatest hair products, how you actually style your hair also has a lot to do with how well your strands are protected. Trends That STICK

For all the minimalists out there, this article will truly speak to your life’s philosophy.

Less is more.

Though we love trying out each season’s top trends, there are some looks that we can and should fall back on when we second-guess ourselves. Just because you’re a “minimalist” doesn’t mean you have boring style! It means you have certain standards that are seldom compromised by the latest, passing trends. A timeless look can always be tweaked and updated when necessary. Simple, sexy, and sophisticated, add these “trends” to your daily style for an updated yet timeless change.

Nude Nails

shutterstock_310418483Though the nude nail is definitely a “trend” right now, a clean-looking nail never really goes out of style. The emphasis is directed elsewhere instead. Perhaps it’s that special ring or watch you just bought yourself. Perhaps it’s a statement coat that deserves the attention. The nude nail look is simple, timeless, and sophisticated, not to mention saves you precious time and money.

Bright eye

Miranda_Kerr_2The right under eye concealer and strategic eyeshadow shading can help you easily achieve this youthful look. First, research the best concealer for your skin shade and start experimenting with the one that blends best. YouTube tutorials can prove invaluable ways to learn new techniques. I have even visited some of my favorite brand’s website as a way to learn more about the products.

As a rule of thumb for eyeshadow application, always emphasize inner corners of your eyes with lighter shades and focus darker tones on the outer corners. If you have smaller eyes, apply eyeliner only on the outer, upper part of the lid line, not all the way across. Secondly, refrain from applying liner in the water line, as that will also make the eyes appear smaller.

Prominent Lashes

shutterstock_318568217From Twiggy to Gigi, no one can deny beautiful, youthful-looking lashes will never be out. That is why using RapidLash® holds a permanent place in our weekly routine. Containing moisturizing and enhancing ingredients like peptides, biotin, panthenol, amino acids, oils, extras, and more, RapidLash® is a safe and effective way to prime your lashes for a healthy-look throughout every season. Using a lash serum is important for those who need help improving the overall look of their eyelashes or for anybody that wants a more defined lash appearance.

Polished Hair

Ed_Burns,_Christy_Turlington_at_27_Dresses_Premiere_1Trends in hair styles can fluctuate from super-volumized to the “messy” look to pink-infused to feather-filled, but timeless and true is the look that exudes a polished and “finished” look. This means keeping the cut “clean-looking,’ and keeping the overall appearance of the hair healthy and shiny-looking. A polished hair-look can mean a lot of different things, which allows a lot of individualization and creativity including styles from bobs to long hair styles.

My most recommended hair-tip for maintaining healthy, polished-looking hair is use of a scalp treatment. After all, we should be aiming at caring for the “root” of the issue at hand, especially as many of us color our hair in some form or fashion. I use RapidHair™, a foam containing ingredients like peptides, biotin, panthenol, amino acids, and niacinamide to really help the scalp and hair look its best season after season.

Defined Brow

shutterstock_236832310We all remember the 90s right? Well we hope it serves as a good reminder that the current “trend” is not always what looks best. Many of us who lived through that time also learned a hard lesson on the eyebrows! There are many reasons why women and men do not like the look of their eyebrows, and one thing that has risen in popularity are eyebrow-enhancing serums. RapidBrow®, a sister-product of RapidLash® contains enhancing and conditioning ingredients which work together to improve the overall appearance of the eyebrows! So for those looking to achieve that sexy, natural-looking and full-looking brow, invest in a serum for weekly use throughout the year. This step will also save you time in the morning during your make-up routine. More time for coffee? Yes please!

LBD- The Little Black Dress

shutterstock_320251427Black dresses are the ultimate pick-me-up for a look that is sexy, sliming, and timeless! A great assortment of LBDs can ensure you never go a day saying that you have nothing to wear. Find a LBD that is perfect for a dressed-down look, and invest in one that is a perfect date-night or girls-night dress to pair with heels. This is a staple you will not have to think twice about and can help you work through any mid-wardrobe crises.

Pretty Natural Lip

shutterstock_166152503I do not mean go sans lip product, goodness no! I mean, make it your ambition to find a staple lip pencil, lipstick, or lip balm that resembles your natural lip shade, maybe one shade darker. It is your aim to define the lips while still making them appear oh-so-kissable. A favorite look of my man’s, this natural lip look gives you the flexibility to be more wild with other aspects of your look- like a brighter-than-usual eyeshadow, loud shoes, or with a fun pair of rose-colored eyeglasses.

Classic Red Lip

Aishwarya_Rai_Cannes_2014Yes, the natural lip is a great go-to for most days looks, but what about that special occasion? A classic red lip exudes all the right elements of sexy and intellect, if done correctly. Tip- Apply a primer and a skin-colored pencil around the lips to enhance the lip line and protect against smudging. This tops the list of trends that will stick around for many years to come.

The 3 Big Brow-Rehab Tips

There are many different factors that can impact the look of our brows and make them appear ill-advised. If you are looking to rehabilitate your eyebrows there are a few things that your esthetician wants you to know and remember. Follow these tips from of the best in the business, Julie Gross, owner of Millennium Personal Spa in Beverly, Massachusetts. She personally transformed my formerly less-than lovely brows from old to bold within two short months. Her motto is: “A good eyebrow wax should cleanup and define the brow. It shouldn’t be to try to create something new on your face.”

DO NOT Pluck Between Appointments

If over-tweezing is the source of your woes, you REALLY need to start listening to the advice of your esthetician. Julie says, “Between appointments it is best not to tweeze, especially if you are trying to grow out your eyebrows. If you are trying to get your brows back to their natural shape, the less you play with them the better! Ultimately, just trying to leave them alone is the best thing.”

Stay Natural

shutterstock_61396495Julie stated, “One of the things that I have learned is that root of the eyebrow is unlike all of the other types of hair roots on your head, arms and legs. When you are manipulating the hair and tweezing regularly, you will find that eventually it just won’t grow back. For girls that start plucking early, this constant tweezing will result in less hair.

Additionally, when women hit menopause, hormones often impact the outer ends of the eyebrows, so keeping them as natural-looking as possible makes a big difference. To assure healthy-looking brows later in life, RapidBrow® is essential.” Eyebrow Enhancing Serums help to condition and improve the overall appearance of fuller-looking eyebrows in as little as 60 days. Containing enhancing and conditioning ingredients, the serum is an effective tool for those looking to achieve a full, natural-looking brow.

Use a Brow Conditioning Treatment

shutterstock_268159853RapidLash® and RapidBrow® are ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested and clinically proven to be safe and effective to cosmetically boost the look of your brows! RapidBrow® Eyebrow Enhancing Serum is formulated with the exclusive and innovative Hexatein®2 Complex, which is comprised of six highly effective ingredients that nourish your brows back to good health.
